Post Op Instructions

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO AFTER EXTRACTIONS

SIMPLE EXTRACTIONS

  • 1. Bite firmly on gauze for 45 minutes. If bleeding continues, replace with folded gauze and bite firmly for another 45 minutes. If bleeding persists (rare), bite on a wet tea bag. Some oozing is expected; however, if frank bleeding continues, call the dentist.

  • 2. Do not spit or suck through a straw for 2-3 days after extraction. Smoking frequently causes dry sockets (an extremely painful complication). For the most comfortable healing period, DO NOT SMOKE! DO NOT RINSE!

  • 3. Carefully follow all directions for taking an antibiotic (penicillin, clindamycin, etc.) if prescribed. Some antibiotics may cause birth control pills to be ineffective. If you are taking pain medication, avoid operating heavy equipment or engaging in activity that requires mental alertness.

SURGICAL EXTRACTIONS OR FULL MOUTH EXTRACTIONS

  • Follow instructions 1, 2 and 3 above.

  • 4. On the day of the extraction an ice pack applied to the face will help minimize swelling.

  • 5. Vigorous physical activity should be avoided on the day of extraction.

  • 6. Sutures will dissolve.
